New Zealand born Adam Bryce was once best known for founding cult art/ fashion/ streetwear website Slamxhype and magazine The New Order, and for the groundbreaking career in creative direction for global brands that followed. But it’s a new, very different project that has captured his Heart.

Having returned from New York and London to his homeland, and established himself as a leading fashion photographer, Bryce decided late last year to re visit Manurewa, where he was raised. One of the country’s most multicultural suburbs, Manurewa is in the heart of South Auckland, an area best known for its gang population, family violence and poverty levels. These are the messages the country knows of Manurewa but Bryce wanted to celebrate a different side.

“When I think of Manurewa, I think of hardworking people, close families and a community who is deeply connected. I am interested in the idea of normality and I wanted to show that for most of Manurewa, everyday life is about the things many of us wish for, rather than the things we fear. And while these images might look unfamiliar from the outside, if you are from Manurewa, you will see Home.”

An organic process has seen Bryce’s idea become a book and exhibition, hugely supported by the businesses, schools and leaders of Manurewa. As the beginning of a transition from fashion to art, and as a message of truth, Manurewa signals a new direction for Bryce.

100% OF THE PROCEEDS OF ‘MANUREWA’ WILL BE DONATED TO THE MANUREWA BUSINESS ASSOCIATION IN ORDER TO HELP REBUILD AND REVITALISE THE SHOPPING PRECINCT AND CREATE A THRIVING LOCAL ECONOMY.
